Most dishwashers last about nine to ten years, and well-built models that are looked after often go longer. Hard water, heavy daily use and a filter that never gets cleaned shorten that. A failed pump, valve, latch or heater is usually worth repairing; a leaking or rusted-through tub usually isn't.

How long do dishwashers last? On average, about nine to ten years. The National Association of Home Builders' long-running study of home components puts the typical dishwasher at around nine years, and well-built models that are looked after often go longer. But the average hides a wide spread. Two identical dishwashers can fail five years apart depending on the water, the household and how they're cared for. Here is what decides it, and how we judge whether a repair still makes sense.

How long do dishwashers last on average?

For a mainstream dishwasher used once a day, nine to ten years is a fair expectation. Premium European machines are built for longer: Miele, for example, says it tests its dishwashers for the equivalent of twenty years of use. Bosch dishwashers are often still worth repairing past their tenth year. At the other end, a basic builder-grade model in a busy kitchen can be worn out in six or seven years.

The age itself matters less than people think. A ten-year-old dishwasher with a failed drain pump and a sound tub is a better machine than a five-year-old one with a leaking tub. What matters is which part has failed, and the condition of everything else.

What wears a dishwasher out sooner

Hard water

Much of North Jersey has hard water. Veolia, which supplies much of Bergen County, reported hardness of about 156 parts per million in its 2023 water quality report. Over the years, scale builds up on the heating element, the spray arm jets, the inlet valve screen and the inside of the pumps. The dishwasher works harder, cleans worse and wears its parts faster. Rinse aid and a detergent made for hard water slow that down a lot. Our Teaneck page covers what hard water does to appliances there.

Heavy use

A dishwasher that runs twice a day in a large household reaches the wear of a ten-year-old machine in about half the time. Door hinges and springs, the door latch, the drain pump and the wash motor all count cycles, not years.

Skipped filter cleaning

Most dishwashers made in the last decade have a filter you clean by hand. When it clogs, the pumps strain, the water stays dirty and food particles end up in places they shouldn't. Cleaning it once a month is the single cheapest thing you can do to make a dishwasher last.

Too much detergent, or the wrong kind

Overdosing powder or gel leaves residue that clogs the spray arms. Regular dish soap makes suds that push water past the door seal. Both shorten the life of seals and pumps.

How long do Bosch dishwashers last?

Bosch dishwashers are a common sight in local kitchens, so it's worth a direct answer. A Bosch dishwasher that's looked after commonly lasts ten years or more. The parts that wear first are usually the drain pump, the door hinge cables and springs, and the door seal. All of them are replaceable on their own, which is why a ten-year-old Bosch with an E24 or E25 drain code is usually worth repairing. Our Bosch repair page lists the common faults.

Repair or replace: the rules we use

When we diagnose an older dishwasher, we weigh four things before recommending either option.

  1. Which part failed. Pumps, valves, door latches, heaters, float switches, spray arms and door seals are all single parts. A cracked or rusted-through tub is not, and it usually ends the machine.

  2. The age and condition of everything else. If the door hinges are failing, the racks are rusting and the tub is scaled, a new pump today may be followed by another repair in a few months.

  3. The repair cost against a new machine. As a rule of thumb, if a dishwasher is past about eight years and the repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new one, replacing it usually makes more sense.

  4. What replacement really involves. A panel-ready or built-in dishwasher costs more to replace than the appliance itself: the installation, the matching cabinet panel and sometimes trim work. That tips more of those repairs toward fixing.

Faults that are almost always worth fixing

  • Not draining (drain pump, filter, check valve). See our guide to a Bosch dishwasher not draining.

  • Not filling (water inlet valve or float switch).

  • Not heating or not drying (heating element or thermostat).

  • Door won't latch (latch assembly).

  • Leaking from the door (door seal, or simply the wrong detergent).

Signs a dishwasher is near the end

  • Water leaking from the tub itself, through rust or a crack.

  • A control board failure on a machine past ten years, especially if the board is discontinued.

  • Several unrelated faults within a year.

  • Rust spreading inside the door or the tub, not just on the racks. Rusty racks are cosmetic and replaceable.

There is also the running cost. ENERGY STAR publishes the water and energy use of current certified dishwashers, which is worth a look if yours is old enough to be a heavy user of both.

What we check on an older dishwasher before recommending anything

A repair-or-replace answer is only as good as the inspection behind it. On a dishwasher past about eight years, we look beyond the fault you called about:

  • The tub and the base pan, for rust, cracks and signs of an old leak that has been dripping unnoticed.

  • The door hinges, cables and springs. A door that drops open or slams shut is a sign of wear that will need attention soon.

  • The pumps and the wash motor, by sound and by how well water moves through a cycle.

  • The spray arms, filter and inlet screen, for scale that tells us how hard the water has been on the machine.

  • Parts availability for that model, because a repair today is only worth it if the next part can still be found.

  • The installation: the drain hose loop, the water supply and the electrical connection, since a poor installation shortens any dishwasher's life.

That way you hear about the next likely problem before you decide, not after you've paid for the first one.

How long do dishwashers last in a busy household?

If your dishwasher runs twice a day, expect the wear parts to show their age sooner, often by year six or seven. That doesn't make a repair a bad idea. It means the condition check above matters more, and so does the routine below.

How to make a dishwasher last longer

  • Clean the filter once a month.

  • Keep rinse aid topped up, and use a detergent suited to hard water.

  • Run the hot tap at the sink before starting a cycle, so the dishwasher starts with hot water.

  • Scrape plates rather than rinsing them clean. Modern detergents need some food soil to work properly.

  • Wipe the door seal and the bottom edge of the door every few weeks.

  • Get small leaks and drain faults fixed early, before water damages the floor or the base of the machine.

If yours is showing its age and you're not sure which way to go, a diagnostic visit settles it. Our diagnostic service tells you what has failed and what a repair involves, and our dishwasher repair page explains how we work. We'll tell you plainly when a machine isn't worth the money.

FAQ

Common questions

How long do Bosch dishwashers last?

A Bosch dishwasher that is looked after commonly lasts ten years or more. The parts that wear first are usually the drain pump, the door hinge cables and springs, and the door seal, and all of them can be replaced on their own, so an older Bosch is often still worth repairing.

Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old dishwasher?

It depends on what failed and the condition of the rest. A ten-year-old dishwasher with a failed drain pump and a sound tub is usually worth fixing. If the tub leaks, the control board is discontinued, or the repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new machine, replacing it usually makes more sense.

What usually breaks first on a dishwasher?

The drain pump, the water inlet valve, the door latch and the door seal are the parts that most often fail first. Clogged filters and spray arms cause many cleaning complaints before any part actually breaks, which is why monthly filter cleaning matters.
