LG Washer OE Error: A Failed Drain Pump in Paramus
By Michael Smith — Head Technician · October 19, 2026 · 7 min read

OE on an LG washer means it can't drain in time. Drain the water through the emergency hose, clean the pump filter and check the drain hose for kinks. If OE returns and the pump hums without moving water, the drain pump has failed and needs replacing.
This October 2026 job in Paramus was an LG front-load washer that stopped mid-cycle with water still in the drum and an OE code on the display. OE is LG's drain error, and the usual suspects are a clogged pump filter or a kinked hose. Here they were both fine. The LG washer drain pump itself had failed, so we replaced it. Below is how we got there, and how to check yours before you call anyone.

Where: Paramus, Bergen County
When: October 2026
Appliance: LG front-load washer
Problem: OE drain error, water left in the drum
Cause: failed drain pump
Fix: drained the washer, replaced the drain pump, ran a full test cycle

What OE means on an LG washer
An LG washer shows OE when it tries to pump water out and the water level doesn't drop within the time it expects. The washer stops to protect itself and leaves the water where it is. The code doesn't say why the water isn't leaving, only that it isn't, so the job is to work along the drain path from the easiest checks to the pump itself.
Step 1: drain the washer safely
A front-load washer that stops with water inside holds a lot more than it looks like. Before anything else, we drained it through the small emergency drain hose behind the access panel at the bottom front, into a shallow tray, a little at a time. Opening the pump filter cap first, with a full drum behind it, is how laundry rooms flood.
Step 2: the pump filter and the drain hose
With the water out, we opened the drain pump filter. This is the most common cause of OE, because socks, coins, hair ties and lint collect there. On this washer, the filter was clear. We then checked the drain hose behind the washer for kinks and blockages and made sure the standpipe it drains into wasn't backed up. Both were fine.
Step 3: testing the LG washer drain pump
That left the pump. We ran a drain test: the pump should run with a steady whir and move water out fast. This one hummed without moving water, which means the motor was getting power but the pump wasn't doing its job. Depending on how a drain pump fails, the motor winding burns out, the impeller breaks or comes loose from the shaft, or the bearings seize. Any of those ends the same way: power goes in and no water comes out.

The fix
We replaced the drain pump with the correct part for the model, reconnected the hoses with new clamps where needed, and ran a full wash and spin cycle to confirm the washer drained quickly, spun at full speed and didn't leak at the new connections. The OE code didn't come back.
Why drain pumps fail
Small items. A coin, a bra underwire or a hair tie that gets past the filter can crack the impeller or jam it until the motor overheats.
Running against a clog. A pump that keeps trying to push water through a blocked filter or hose works hot and wears out sooner.
Too much detergent. Front-loaders need high-efficiency detergent in small amounts. Excess suds make the pump work harder on every drain.
Age. A pump runs at least twice in every cycle. After years of use, the motor or bearings simply wear out.
How to check your LG washer before you call
Restart it. Switch the washer off for a minute, then run a drain and spin cycle on its own. A one-off OE caused by a heavy, unbalanced load sometimes clears.
Clean the pump filter. Drain the water through the emergency hose first, then unscrew the filter and clear it.
Check the drain hose. Look for kinks behind the washer, and make sure the hose isn't pushed too far down into the standpipe.
Listen. A hum with no water moving after the filter is clean points to the pump. Silence can mean a wiring or control fault instead.
If OE keeps coming back after all four, the pump or its wiring needs a technician. Our washer repair page explains how we diagnose and quote before any work.
Other drain problems that show the same OE code
OE only says the water isn't leaving fast enough. On a washer where the pump turns out to be fine, the usual causes are:
A frozen drain hose. In an unheated garage or basement during a cold snap, water in the drain hose or standpipe can freeze. The washer shows OE until it thaws, and nothing is broken.
Too many suds. Regular detergent, or too much HE detergent, fills the drum with foam that the pump struggles to move. Running a rinse cycle with no detergent usually clears it.
A drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe. That can seal the pipe or start a siphon. The hose should go only a few inches in.
A blocked house drain. If the laundry sink or a nearby floor drain also backs up, the problem is the household plumbing.
Wiring or control faults. If the pump stays completely silent during the drain step, the fault may be in the wiring or the control rather than the pump.
What to have ready when you call
The model number tells us which pump the washer uses. On most LG front-loaders it's on a label inside the door opening, on the rim around the drum, or on the back of the cabinet. Mention the code on the display, whether the pump hums or stays silent, and whether you've already drained the water and cleaned the filter.
Is a failed LG washer drain pump worth repairing?
Usually, yes. A drain pump is a single part, and on a front-load washer in otherwise good condition, replacing it is far cheaper than a new washer plus delivery and installation. It's a different story if the washer also has worn drum bearings, a loud rumbling spin that gets worse over time, because that repair is much bigger. That's worth checking at the same visit, so you can decide with the full picture. Our LG repair page covers the other common LG codes, including UE and LE on washers and d80 on dryers.
Front-load or top-load: same idea, different access
Top-load washers have drain pumps too, but most don't have a filter you can reach from the front, so debris goes straight to the pump and a blockage usually means taking the cabinet apart. That's one reason front-loaders have the small access door: clearing the filter yourself every month or two prevents most pump failures on front-loaders.
How to keep the drain pump working
Check pockets before every load. Coins and small objects are the main cause of pump damage.
Wash small items like socks and baby clothes in a mesh bag.
Clean the pump filter every month or two, more often in a busy household.
Use HE detergent, and less of it than the cap suggests if your water is soft.
Leave the door open after washing so the drum and gasket dry, which keeps lint and residue from building up.
