When a Frigidaire ice maker stops, check that it's switched on, the freezer is at 0°F, and the water filter is the right type, fully seated and not overdue. Then check the water line for kinks and the fill tube for ice. A failed inlet valve or ice maker comes last.

A Frigidaire ice maker not working is rarely a broken ice maker. Far more often the cause is the water getting to it: an overdue filter, a kinked supply line, low pressure or a frozen fill tube. Those are cheap to fix, and some you can fix yourself. This guide goes through the checks in the order we do them, so the expensive part, the ice maker itself, is the last thing replaced instead of the first.

Is the ice maker switched on?

It sounds obvious, but it catches people out, especially after cleaning the freezer or moving the bin. Depending on the model, a Frigidaire ice maker is switched off in one of three ways:

  • An on/off switch on the ice maker itself, often under the front cover.

  • An "ice maker" or "ice off" setting on the control panel.

  • On older models, a wire arm on the side of the ice maker. When the arm is raised and locked up, ice production stops.

Also check whether the refrigerator is in a vacation, energy-saving or Sabbath mode. On some models those pause the ice maker or the dispenser.

New refrigerator? Give it a day

A new refrigerator, or one that has just been reconnected, usually takes about 24 hours to make its first ice, and two to three days to fill the bin. Throw away the first few batches, which can be small or cloudy while air clears from the water line. If there's still nothing after a full day, check that the water supply was actually connected and turned on during installation. It's an easy step to miss.

Check the freezer temperature

Ice makers are designed around a freezer at 0°F (-18°C). Closer to 10°F, ice production slows to a trickle, and above that it stops. A freezer that isn't cold enough is also a sign of a bigger problem, such as a worn door seal, an overpacked freezer blocking the vents, dusty condenser coils or a failing fan. If the ice cream is soft, deal with that first; our refrigerator repair page covers the usual causes.

The Frigidaire water filter

An overdue water filter is the most common reason a Frigidaire ice maker slows down. As the filter clogs, less water reaches the ice maker, so cubes come out small, hollow or not at all. A filter that's the wrong type, or isn't fully seated, can stop the water completely.

Frigidaire refrigerators use several filter families, such as PureSource and PureAdvantage, and they aren't interchangeable. The model number on the label inside the fresh-food compartment tells you which one fits. After fitting a new filter:

  • Push or twist it until it locks; a filter that isn't seated often leaks or blocks the flow.

  • Run several glasses of water through the dispenser to clear air and carbon dust.

  • Reset the filter indicator, usually by holding the filter button for a few seconds. Your manual shows how.

The water supply line and pressure

Pull the refrigerator out carefully and look at the thin water line behind it. A kink, often from pushing the refrigerator back too hard, cuts the flow. Then find the shutoff valve the line connects to, usually under the kitchen sink or in the basement ceiling below the refrigerator. Make sure it's fully open.

Older installations sometimes use a self-piercing saddle valve clamped onto a pipe. They clog and restrict flow over time and are a common cause of slow ice. Replacing one with a proper shutoff valve is a plumbing job, but a worthwhile one.

A frozen fill tube

If you can hear the ice maker cycle, a click and a whir every few hours, but the tray stays empty, the fill tube that carries water into the ice maker may be frozen. You can often see ice in the tube where it enters the freezer. Thaw it gently with a hair dryer on low, held well away from plastic parts, or with warm water from a turkey baster. Never use a sharp tool.

A fill tube that freezes again within days is a symptom, not the problem. The usual causes are low water pressure, which lets water trickle and freeze, or a water inlet valve that drips after it closes.

The water inlet valve

The inlet valve, at the back of the refrigerator, opens to let water into the ice maker and the dispenser. When it fails, nothing flows: you may hear a buzz with no water, or no sound at all. When it leaks, it causes the frozen fill tube above. If the dispenser also gives no water or very little, the inlet valve moves to the top of the list.

French-door models: ice building up in the door

On Frigidaire French-door refrigerators with the ice maker in the fresh-food door, the ice compartment has to stay below freezing while the door around it is much warmer. If its seal, fan or heater fails, ice builds up inside the compartment and jams the ice maker or the chute. Melting the ice brings the ice maker back for a while, but it returns until the cause is fixed.

How to do a Frigidaire ice maker reset

On most Frigidaire models, a reset simply means turning the ice maker off and back on with its switch or the control panel, then giving it up to 24 hours. Switching the refrigerator off at the plug or breaker for a minute also restarts the controls. A reset clears a one-off glitch. It won't fix a frozen fill tube, a failed valve or a dead ice maker motor, and those are the faults behind most calls.

When the ice maker itself has failed

If water reaches the tray and the freezer is cold, but the ice maker never harvests, or it makes ice and never pushes it into the bin, the ice maker assembly has failed. On most models it's replaced as one unit. It's the last item on the list for a reason: replacing it when the real problem was a filter or a valve wastes money and leaves the fault in place.

Is a Frigidaire ice maker not working worth repairing?

In most cases, yes. Filters, supply lines, inlet valves and ice maker assemblies are all inexpensive next to a new refrigerator. The exception is an older refrigerator that also has a cooling problem, where the ice maker is just the first symptom of something bigger. Our Frigidaire repair page covers the brand's other common faults, and our ice maker repair page explains how we diagnose first and give you a written estimate before any work.

How to keep the ice coming

  • Change the water filter about every six months, sooner if ice slows down or cubes get smaller.

  • Keep the freezer at 0°F and avoid packing food against the vents near the ice maker.

  • Empty and wash the ice bin every few months. Old ice clumps together, jams the auger and picks up freezer odors.

  • If you go away for more than a week, switch the ice maker off and turn it back on when you return.

  • When the refrigerator is pulled out for cleaning, check the water line isn't kinked before pushing it back.

FAQ

Common questions

How long does a new Frigidaire refrigerator take to make ice?

A new or newly reconnected Frigidaire refrigerator usually makes its first ice in about 24 hours and fills the bin in two to three days. Throw away the first few batches. If there's no ice after a full day, check that the water supply is connected and turned on.

How do I reset my Frigidaire ice maker?

On most Frigidaire models, turn the ice maker off and back on with its switch or the control panel, then allow up to 24 hours. Unplugging the refrigerator for a minute also restarts the controls. A reset won't fix a frozen fill tube, a failed water valve or a failed ice maker.

Why is my Frigidaire making small or hollow ice cubes?

Small or hollow cubes mean too little water is reaching the ice maker. The usual causes are an overdue or wrong water filter, a kinked supply line, a partly closed or clogged shutoff valve, or low water pressure. Replace the filter first, then check the line and valve.
