Common microwave problems
Before you book, it helps to know what actually tends to go wrong. These are the microwave faults we see most often, what typically causes each one, and what it means for you — not a diagnosis, just a plain-language starting point.
Magnetron failure
The magnetron is the component that actually generates microwave energy, and when it fails the rest of the unit can appear completely normal — light on, turntable spinning, fan running, keypad responsive — while producing no heat whatsoever. It's the most common explanation for a microwave that runs through a full cycle but leaves food stone cold.
Door switch or interlock faults
Microwaves use two or three separate interlock switches whose entire purpose is guaranteeing the door is fully and securely closed before any power reaches the magnetron — a genuine safety system, since microwave energy is not meant to be able to run with the door open under any circumstance. A failed switch commonly stops the unit from starting at all, and because this system is safety-relevant, it's worth having looked at promptly rather than worked around.
Turntable motor failure
When the turntable stops rotating but the microwave otherwise heats food normally, the small turntable motor and drive coupler underneath the cavity floor have usually failed — an inexpensive, quick part to replace and entirely unrelated to the unit's actual heating function. It's worth confirming the glass tray and its support ring are seated correctly first, since a tray that's simply off its track can look and sound like a motor failure without being one.
Control panel faults
A keypad that doesn't respond at all, or reliably responds to the wrong button, more often points to a failing touch membrane or a loose control-board connection behind the panel than to the electronics that actually generate heat. It's common on units that see frequent daily use over several years, and on built-in and over-the-range models it's usually a self-contained assembly rather than something wired point to point.
Sparking inside the cavity
Sparking is usually caused by metal — foil, a gilded plate edge, a twist tie — inside the cavity, or by a worn waveguide cover, the small panel shielding the cavity from the magnetron's feed point, arcing where food splatter has burned into it over time. It's worth stopping use and having it checked rather than continuing to run the microwave once sparking has been seen.
Exhaust fan and light faults on over-the-range units
Over-the-range microwaves double as the kitchen's exhaust fan and cooktop light, and both run on their own motor and bulbs, separate from the cooking circuit entirely. A fan that's stopped clearing steam and smoke, or a cooktop light that's gone dark, doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong with the microwave's actual heating function — the two systems fail independently of each other.

Door interlock switches
We test all three interlock switches first — they're a genuine safety system that stops the magnetron running with the door open, and a failed one is a common cause of won't-start. We never bypass an interlock to keep a unit running.

Magnetron & high-voltage diode
If power reaches the unit but it won't heat, we test the high-voltage diode and capacitor before condemning the magnetron itself, since the diode fails far more often and is a much simpler part to replace.

Turntable motor & coupler
A stuck turntable is usually a worn drive coupler or a dead turntable motor, not a magnetron problem — a quick, low-cost check we rule out early.

Keypad membrane & control board
Dead keypad response usually traces to the touch membrane or a control board connection rather than the keypad itself, which changes what part gets ordered and whether the whole panel needs replacing.
