Common GE problems we fix
What usually goes wrong, what causes it, and what it means for you. A starting point, not a diagnosis.
Refrigerator not cooling
A failed evaporator or condenser fan, a defrost fault that has iced over the coil, or a dusty condenser, checked in that order before the sealed system.
Ice maker or water dispenser not working
Water pressure, the filter, the fill valve or a frozen fill tube. Some GE models read a chip in the water filter, so a worn-out or non-genuine filter can also stop the water.
Oven not heating or temperature off
A failed bake element, a weak gas igniter or a faulty temperature sensor. GE ovens show many faults as an F-code on the display, which tells us where to start.
Dishwasher not draining or cleaning
A clogged filter, a blocked drain pump or a disposal connection that is blocked. On a newly installed disposal, a knockout plug left in place is a classic cause.
Washer won't spin or lid lock flashing
Top-load GE washers lock the lid before spinning. A failed lid lock, a drain problem or a worn drive part stops the cycle.
Dryer runs but doesn't heat
A blown thermal fuse, a failed element on electric models, or a gas igniter or valve coil on gas models. A clogged vent is often what blew the fuse.
Repair or replace
Is it worth repairing?
GE parts are among the easiest to get, and most GE faults are a single part: a fan, igniter, element, pump, lid lock or sensor. Repair is usually the better value, especially on GE Profile, Café and Monogram appliances, which cost more to replace.
Still under GE's warranty? Call GE first: warranty repairs go through the manufacturer's own service network. We're an independent repair company and fix GE appliances once the warranty has ended.
Questions
GE repair FAQ
Who owns GE Appliances?
GE Appliances has been owned by Haier since 2016 and is still based in Louisville, Kentucky. Its brands include GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram, which share many parts. SOS Appliance Repair services all four.
Does my GE oven have Sabbath mode?
Many GE, GE Profile, Café and Monogram ovens and ranges, and many GE refrigerators, have a Sabbath mode, turned on with a button sequence that differs by model and is listed in the owner's manual. SOS Appliance Repair can set it up, show you how to use it, and repair a keypad or control that stops it from working.
Do you repair GE appliances under warranty?
No. While a GE appliance is under the manufacturer's warranty, GE arranges repairs through its own authorized service network, so call them first. SOS Appliance Repair is independent and repairs GE appliances once the warranty has ended, with its own 12-month parts-and-labor warranty on the work.
